Expanding into Canada: what US retailers get wrong about the market data

Canadian geography, census structure and density patterns differ enough that a US site model ported unchanged will misprice most markets.

Canada looks like an easy adjacency from a US expansion desk: shared language in most provinces, familiar formats, comparable incomes. The site selection data behaves differently enough that a model ported unchanged will systematically misrank markets.

Different census geography

There is no Canadian equivalent of a block group with the same properties. Census subdivisions, census tracts and dissemination areas nest differently, and the population thresholds differ. Any model keyed to US tract sizes needs re-normalising before its density thresholds mean anything north of the border.

Concentration changes the screen

A very large share of the population sits in a narrow southern band and in a handful of metros. Market-count screens that work across hundreds of comparable US metros produce a short, lumpy Canadian list. Expect fewer viable markets and more intra-metro site work.

Seasonality is not a footnote

Winter severity varies enormously between Vancouver, Toronto and the Prairies, and it changes footfall patterns, drive-thru mix and staffing. Climate belongs in the model as a weighted factor, not as commentary.

Regulatory and language texture

  • Quebec language requirements affect signage, packaging and hiring plans.
  • Provincial rules on licensing, hours and labour differ materially.
  • Tax treatment varies by province and affects effective pricing.

Practical approach

Rebuild the demand model on Canadian census geography, recount competitors from a source with consistent national coverage, weight climate explicitly, and compare markets on normalised per-capita metrics rather than raw counts. Then take the shortlist to site level with drive-time trade areas.
